Since Joan Baez last CD (Rare, Live and Classic) on Sparrow Records back in 1993, I have felt a massive void in my life. Lead single “Speaking Of Dreams” and “El Preso Numero Nueve” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. This -song debut EP shows the promise that Joan Baez has. IT makes me wanna dance!
Musically Geordie is superior to other tracks in Rare, Live and Classic.
El Preso Numero Nueve I just LOVE this mix! Blues Improv is another favourite of mine. Ring Them Bells is a bit of a show-tune. This track, in particular, has the kind of undeniably catchy flavor. Joan Baez sings his heart out in A Hard Rain’s A Gonna Fall. This song stands out greatly from the others. Such hits like Farewell, Angelina will leave you hooked. Although I prefer the faster paced music, I think Marriott USA is my favorite song on Rare, Live and Classic. The opening track Amazing Grace is very much like you would expect from other albums. Jackaroe is a bit different from Joan Baez stereotypical stuff. After few listenings I started to like Honest Lullaby more and more. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot is really the reason why I recommend buying Rare, Live and Classic. Jesse presents the marvelous mix of instruments on Rare, Live and Classic. Children And All That Jazz as a highlight of Rare, Live and Classic contains a ton of amazing melodies. This song could easily nestle itself onto the world top playlists. Joan Baez emotions are reflected through Diamonds & Rust. From the sound of it, I believe the song can be a big radio hit. Listening to Angel Band you can hear that Joan Baez has still amazing chemistry with band members. Johnny, I Hardly Knew Yeh is one of these floating songs. Love Song To A Stranger - This one is what it is: a powerful, primal invitation to love. Excellent vocals and musical performances. Blew our minds when we first heard Hello In There. This track makes my mind whirl and vibrate with flowing energy. Overall a nice softer song. The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down is nothing but pure genius. Mama Tried is Joan Baez’s best work in years. In this song fans will recognize the unique vocals of Joan Baez. Donna Donna - Check out that bassline! Best song on the album, love it. No Joan Baez song has come close to capturing my attention as I Am A Poor Wayfaring Stranger did. Sweet Sir Galahad is a striking and quite long song. Catch The Wind is a medium tempo tune. Don’t judge Children Of Darkness on the first listening. The song The Swallow Song ending is my favorite… so catchy! In Legend Of A Girl Child Linda Joan Baez is at his best. Rare, Live and Classic couldn’t start better than with the up up-beat title track Pack Up Your Sorrows. All of songs on Rare, Live and Classic and have something to say letting alone Colours. This song is like perfectly aged vintage bordeaux wine not a tequila shot. There But For Fortune - For me, this is the best of the album. Mama, You Been On My Mind has a fun tempo. We Shall Overcome sets the tone for the entire album. This track is almost perfect, instrumentals and vocals combine awesomely. Joan Baez must have run out of lyrics on the next track With God On Our Side. Other tracks are good but your best bet is to stick with Troubled And I Don’t Know Why. What Have They Done To The Rain - My least favorite song on this album. Wagoner’s Lad is the song that really did it for me. Voice and instruments in Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream complement each other. I hope to keep hearing Joan Baez works for a long time to come. House Of The Rising Sun is perhaps one of the best tracks of the past decade. John Riley is a fine track on any terms. This track is a fabulous selection of easy listening, suitable for any age, taste or occasion. We Are Crossing Jordan River is pretty funky and mellow. John Hardy - This one has a powerful beat and a good melody. Auctioneer is one of the most beautiful songs ever to grace my stereo. Black Is The Color is an underrated song: I like its lyrics and melody a lot. Nice and different song. In Scarlet Ribbons full palet of sound is used by Joan Baez to accentuate the presentation. Music and lyrics of Jimmy Brown creates, for me, fertile ground for daydreaming.
